Helping reduce fires in Sunderland

20 02 2012

Building on the success of last years delivery, Gibber are pleased to announce that they will once again be working in partnership with the Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service in Sunderland.

Anti-social behaviour fire reduction - Gibber Theatre Project
With the support of funding from the West Area Committee Strategic Initiative Bid (SIB) and Local Multi Agency Problem Solving group (LMAPS), TWFRS worked with Gibber Educational Theatre Group to deliver anti- social behaviour messages to over 900 pupils in secondary schools in the West Area of Sunderland. This was a unique and innovative method of engaging with young people aged 12 – 14 with the primary aim of reducing the number of anti-social behaviour fires (local indicator 16). The interim evaluation shows a reduction of these fires from quarter one to quarter three to be 35% and is expected to have long term impacts."
Taken from the Sunderland District Plan 2011/12

Having concentrated on the West of the City in 2011, Gibber will this year be visiting all Sunderland High schools with What a laugh - a hard hitting 50 minute multi-media performance that explores the dangers and potential consequences associated with deliberately starting fires. As well as following the story of three 14 year olds using live drama, music and popular culture the performance touches on the traumatic story of Connor Rowntree, a local Sunderland teenager who suffered 90% burns.

“the students reacted really well to the performance, they found it entertaining but they also really got the serious message, watching their reactions I think it had a big impact.
Thanks a lot for such a powerful performance."
